Moving to Idaho: what to know before you go
Idaho is a big state built on open space and a whole lot of potatoes, and Boise sits in its sunny southwest corner. If you are moving here from the coast, a few things will surprise you: the climate, the taxes, and exactly how far apart everything is.
It is a high desert
People picture green mountains and pine trees. The Treasure Valley is mostly sagebrush plains that get 12 inches of rain a year, framed by dry foothills that turn golden in summer. The green mountains are real, they are just an hour or more away. Boise is one of the sunniest cities in the country, and it is dry in a way the coast never is.
The taxes people get wrong
Idaho does have a state income tax, which surprises a lot of people coming from Washington and Oregon shoppers who assume the Northwest is all tax-free. Property taxes are moderate and assessed at the local level, city by city. Factor both into your budget before you compare offers.
Distance is the real culture shock
Idahoans measure trips in hours, not minutes. Sun Valley is 2.5 hours from Boise. McCall is about 2. The nearest ocean is a full day's drive, and the nearest true megacity is Seattle, about 8 hours. Plan for travel, not errands, when you need the big-city stuff.
Why people are coming
The draw is straightforward: a smaller city with real jobs (Micron is the anchor employer here), immediate outdoors, good schools in the suburbs, and a pace that suits families and retirees. The housing boom followed the jobs. You are not late to a secret; you are coming to a growth story that is already well underway.
Fit matters more than hype
Idaho is not going to be everyone, and that is fine. It leans conservative, it is spread out, and the winters and summers are both stronger than people expect. Come for a visit in February and in August, drive the actual commute, and then decide.
