The short answer
Summer on the Boise River means floating about 6 miles through town, from Barber Park to Ann Morrison Park, in about 2 to 3 hours. In 2026 the season ran from June 20 through Labor Day. A day on the river costs little: $7 to park at Barber Park and $5 for the shuttle back, with tube rentals from $19, and a tube needs no permit or sticker.

What is summer on the Boise River like?
If you're moving to Boise from California, Oregon, or Washington for Micron, the Boise River float is a summer outing right in town. You put in at Barber Park in Southeast Boise, float about 6 miles to Ann Morrison Park near downtown, and ride the shuttle back, per Ada County. The 2026 season ran 80 days, and Float the Boise partner agencies estimate more than 150,000 people floated the river, per the City of Boise.
In 2026, parking at Barber Park was $7 per vehicle, per Float the Boise, and Boise River Raft and Tube charged $5 for the shuttle back and $19 and up for a tube rental. Bring your own tube and you pay only parking and the shuttle. My floating guide covers the route and the rules, and my Micron relocation guide covers the rest of the move.
Do you need a permit to float the Boise River?
Not for a tube. Idaho requires a $7 Invasive Species Fund sticker on non-motorized boats, but a boat is exempt if it is under 10 feet long, non-motorized, and inflatable, per Idaho Parks and Recreation. A tube or a small inflatable needs no sticker. Your own kayak, or a raft 10 feet or longer, does. Idaho law also requires children 14 and under to wear a life jacket, per Boise River Raft and Tube.
How does the Boise River compare with the West Coast?
In Sacramento, Sunrise Recreation Area on the American River charges $8 per vehicle, per Sacramento County Regional Parks. Oregon requires a Waterway Access Permit for every non-motorized boat operator, regardless of the boat's length, and a 2026 permit costs $20, per the Oregon State Marine Board. In Spokane, everyone on the river in a watercraft, including inner tubes and pool toys, must wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket, per the City of Spokane.
How cold is the Boise River?
Cold. Float the Boise says the river's water temperatures are cold year-round, so plan to get wet, and bring water shoes and a life jacket.
What else can you do on the river in summer?
The Boise Whitewater Park at 3400 W. Pleasanton Ave. has an adjustable wave for kayakers and surfers, per the City of Boise. Sandy Point, at the base of Lucky Peak Dam in Lucky Peak State Park, is known for its beach and clear, cool water, per Idaho Parks and Recreation. The Living in Boise guide rounds up the rest of the season.
Where should river people look for a home?
Barber Park, the put-in, is in Southeast Boise near the Barber Valley and Harris Ranch, and Ann Morrison Park, the take-out, is near downtown. Some homes near the river sit in a flood zone, which can affect insurance, so check the FEMA flood map for any home you consider. Text me your budget and how close you want to be to the water.
