The short answer

Boise has 19 off-leash areas for dogs: 8 fenced dog parks and 11 more parks with off-leash areas, and many foothills trails allow dogs off leash under voice control. The biggest change from California, Oregon, or Washington is licensing: every city in Ada County requires dogs to have a license, and in 2026 Boise's runs $16.75 a year for a spayed or neutered dog and $39.25 for an unaltered dog over a year old, plus a $3 processing fee per license.

How much does a dog license cost in Boise?

If you're moving to Boise for Micron with a dog, licensing is the first thing that changes. Every city in Ada County requires dogs to have and wear a license, and each city sets its own fee. In Boise in 2026, an annual license for a spayed or neutered dog costs $16.75, and an unaltered dog over a year old costs $39.25, plus a $3 processing fee per license. In unincorporated Ada County, the county's own license runs $17.40 for a spayed or neutered dog and $43.60 for an unspayed or unneutered dog.

Where Spayed or neutered, annual Unaltered, annual
Boise, Idaho $16.75 + $3 processing $39.25 + $3 processing
San Diego County, California $20 $60
Washington County, Oregon $34 $56
Clark County, Washington $25 $50

California, Oregon, and Washington also license dogs, but by county, and the fees vary. As examples, in 2026: San Diego County charges $20 a year for a spayed or neutered dog and $60 for an unaltered dog; Washington County, Oregon charges $34 and $56; and Clark County, Washington charges $25 and $50. Boise's fee for a spayed or neutered dog lands in the lower part of that range.

Where can your dog run in Boise?

Boise has 19 off-leash areas for dogs: 8 fenced dog parks and 11 more parks with off-leash areas, some open only part of the year. The fenced parks include Dog Island at Ann Morrison Park near downtown, Military Reserve in the East End, and Morris Hill on the Bench. The seasonal off-leash areas include Ann Morrison Park, Optimist Youth Sports Complex, and Simplot Sports Complex.

Outside Boise, Eagle Island State Park just west of Eagle has a 212-acre off-leash dog area, and Meridian has two off-leash dog parks, Storey Bark Park and Discovery Bark Park.

What are the leash rules on Boise trails and the Greenbelt?

On many Ridge to Rivers trails in the foothills, dogs can be off leash if you carry a leash and keep your dog within 30 feet and under voice control. Some trails require a leash at all times, including the Camel's Back trail and all of Polecat Gulch Reserve. Dogs must be on a leash on Greenbelt paths. On City of Boise land, breaking a leash rule can bring an $81.50 fine.

What should you check before renting or buying with a dog?

  • HOA pet rules: some HOAs limit the number, size, or breed of pets. Read the rules before you make an offer.
  • Condo rules: downtown buildings often have their own pet rules and fees.
  • Fencing: check the fence height and condition, and whether the HOA limits fence styles.
  • Distance to the off-leash spots: if your dog needs to run every day, being a few minutes from a dog park or trailhead makes it easier.
