Hunting in Idaho for Micron Movers from the West Coast

The short answer
In 2026, an Idaho resident hunting license costs $15.75, below California's $64.54, Oregon's $39, and Washington's $55.13 small game license, but you pay nonresident prices until you qualify. If you were born on or after January 1, 1975, you need Idaho hunter education unless you already hold a certificate or a hunting license from another state.

How does hunting in Idaho compare with the West Coast?
If you're moving to Boise for Micron from California, Oregon, or Washington and you hunt, the question is whether hunting in Idaho fits how you hunt now. It comes down to three differences: the license price, the residency wait, and the hunter education rule. The license is the easy one, and the prices below come from each state's own fish and wildlife agency.
| State | Resident annual license (2026) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Idaho | $15.75 | base license; big game tags and permits are separate |
| California | $64.54 | base resident hunting license |
| Oregon | $39.00 | resident annual hunting license |
| Washington | $55.13 | small game license; big game license is separate |
Washington's $55.13 is its small game license, and big game licenses are sold separately, per the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. California's $64.54 is the base resident hunting license, per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Oregon's $39 is the resident annual hunting license, per the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. On price alone, Idaho is the cheapest of the four. For the rest of the move, my Micron relocation guide covers neighborhoods, commute times, and the paperwork, and the full hunting guide has the details on the wildlife management areas and the seasons.
How long until you can buy a resident license?
Idaho counts you as a resident after you've lived here six months with the intent to stay, and you need an Idaho driver's license or state ID to buy resident licenses, per Idaho Fish and Game. Until then, you pay the nonresident price.
Buying a house here doesn't start that clock early. Idaho Fish and Game says owning property or paying property taxes in Idaho doesn't qualify you on its own.
California and Oregon use a similar six-month rule: six months of continuous residence in California, per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and six consecutive months of physical residence in Oregon, per Oregon law. Washington is faster at 90 days with a permanent place of abode in the state, per the Washington Administrative Code. So the wait is the same as California and Oregon, and longer than Washington.
Who needs hunter education in Idaho?
Idaho requires hunter education for anyone born on or after January 1, 1975, per Idaho Fish and Game. A hunter education certificate or a hunting license from another state counts as proof, so a West Coast hunter who already holds one is covered.
The other states draw the line differently. California has no birth date cutoff: every hunter needs proof of hunter education, and a hunting license from any state issued within the previous two years counts as proof, per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Oregon requires it only for hunters under 18, per the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Washington requires it for anyone born after January 1, 1972, per the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.
What can you hunt near Boise?
The Boise River Wildlife Management Area covers 41,500 acres of foothills along Lucky Peak and Arrowrock reservoirs and holds the largest wintering mule deer herd in Idaho, per Idaho Fish and Game. It is the main winter range for deer and elk in Unit 39, and Warm Springs Avenue and State Highway 21 run through it, per Idaho Fish and Game.
Fort Boise Wildlife Management Area is 1,548 acres where the Boise and Snake rivers meet near Parma, known for ducks, geese, and pheasants. Idaho Fish and Game's pheasant stocking program releases pheasants at Fort Boise twice a week, and hunters 18 and older need an Upland Game Bird Permit to hunt stocked pheasants, with each permit covering six pheasants.
Some Idaho hunts have a limited number of tags given out by drawing, called controlled hunts. In 2026, applications ran April 1 to 30 for moose, bighorn sheep, and mountain goat, and May 1 to June 5 for deer, elk, pronghorn, fall black bear, and fall turkey, per Idaho Fish and Game.
Where should hunters live near Boise?
If you want the foothills and the Boise River Wildlife Management Area close by, look at Southeast Boise toward Lucky Peak, and the East End and Boise Foothills against the hills. For Fort Boise and the west end of the valley, look at Nampa in Canyon County. Tell me what you hunt and your budget, and I'll send you the homes closest to it.

The license costs less, and the residency wait is the same as California and Oregon at six months and longer than Washington's 90 days. The hunter education rule differs: Idaho uses a birth date of January 1, 1975, California requires it for anyone without a prior qualifying license, Oregon only for hunters under 18, and Washington for anyone born after January 1, 1972.
How long do you have to live in Idaho to buy a resident hunting license?
Six months, with the intent to stay, and you need an Idaho driver's license or state ID to buy resident licenses. Owning property or paying property taxes in Idaho doesn't qualify you on its own.
Does Idaho accept hunter education from California, Oregon, or Washington?
Yes. Idaho Fish and Game accepts a hunter education certificate or a hunting license from another state as proof. If you were born on or after January 1, 1975 and hold neither, you need to take Idaho hunter education.
