Fishing in Boise for Micron Movers from the West Coast

October 6, 2026 · Justin Murillo, REALTOR®

The short answer

Fishing works well in Boise. The Boise River runs through the middle of town, and Idaho Fish and Game stocks it with rainbow trout plus hatchery steelhead in late fall. In 2026, a resident annual fishing license costs $30.50, below California, Oregon, and Washington, but you need to live in Idaho six months and hold an Idaho driver's license before you can buy it.

How does fishing in Boise compare with the West Coast?

Most of what changes when you move to Boise for Micron from California, Oregon, or Washington is the license and the water. For Micron movers, fishing in Boise means freshwater trout in the river, stocked ponds, and hatchery steelhead in late fall, not the salmon runs and ocean fishing you may be used to on the coast. The license is a straight cost comparison, and the numbers below come from each state's own fish and wildlife agency.

State Resident annual license (2026) Nonresident annual license (2026)
Idaho $30.50 $108.00
California $64.54 $174.14
Oregon $50.00 $138.00
Washington (freshwater license) $39.95 $115.85

The resident price is the one that matters after you move, because you pay the nonresident price until you qualify. If you're moving for a job at Micron, my Micron relocation guide covers the rest of the move, and the full fishing guide has the details on the river and the ponds.

What will you fish for in Boise?

The change for West Coast anglers is the target. Boise fishing is freshwater: rainbow trout in the river, bass in the stocked ponds, and hatchery steelhead in the Boise River in late fall. Idaho Fish and Game stocks rainbow trout in stretches of the river during the year.

Quinn's Pond and Veterans Park Pond are stocked community ponds in Boise, and the South Fork of the Boise River below Anderson Ranch Dam is a trophy trout fishery a day trip away. My fishing guide walks through each one, including the steelhead permit and the catch limits.

How long until you can buy a resident license?

Idaho counts you as a resident after you've lived here six months with the intent to stay, and you need an Idaho driver's license or state ID to buy resident licenses from a vendor, per Idaho Fish and Game. Until then, you pay the nonresident price.

California and Oregon use a similar six-month rule, per the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Washington is faster at 90 days with a Washington driver's license, per the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. So the wait is the same as California and Oregon, and longer than Washington.

Where should anglers live in Boise?

Look close to the river and the stocked ponds. Southeast Boise sits near Barber Park and the Boise River, Northwest Boise near Veterans Park Pond, Meridian near Settlers Park Pond, and Eagle near Merrill Pond. Tell me where you like to fish, and I'll send you homes close to it.
